Look around. What do you see? Glass, wood, cloth. All the things around you are forms of matter. Matter is anything that takes up space. YOU are matter! All the world is made up of matter, even the most distant stars and planets are made of matter. All matter can be classified into three forms: elements, compounds, and mixtures. An element is a substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances. Carbon, hydrogen, iron, gold, and copper are some examples.
