2. Course Description: The Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for mathematics have been designed to achieve a balance among concepts, skills, and problem solving. The curriculum stresses a problem-based approach which puts students first. (http://www.georgiastandards.org/) Students solve problems, reason, and estimate throughout mathematics. They will select and use problem-solving strategies, select and use appropriate tools in solving problems, use estimation to check the reasonableness of results, and solve non-routine problems for which the answer is not obvious.
3. Course Outline for the Year:
First Semester: Major topics similarity, integers, and linear relationships.
Second Semester: Major topics include symmetry, transformations, and data distribution.
4. Grading Scheme: The grading policy is: Grading Scale 15% Homework and Warm-Ups 90-100 A 20% Investigations 80-89 B 25% Quizzes 70-79 C 40% Tests and Alternative Assessments 69 and below F
5. Special Projects: Projects will be assigned when applicable. Some of these will be completed in school. Ten points will be deducted for each day a project is late.
6. Homework Expectations: Homework will be assigned almost every day. All math work is to be written in pencil only. It is crucial that class work/homework be done in an organized fashion, making sure to show all steps used in solving the problems. If the student does not show the necessary work and/or explanation on his/her paper, it will be considered an incomplete assignment. Homework is given to reinforce material presented in class so it is important that the homework is done on the day assigned. We will check and correct homework using a pen in class the following day. Late homework may be turned in the next day for partial credit. No credit will be given for homework submitted more than one day late.
7. Provision for Improving Grade: Students who have a 73 or below or failing cumulative grades may ask the teacher for opportunities to improve their grade when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher concerning recovery.
8. Scheduled Help Sessions: Monday mornings from 7:45 am until 8:10 am
Additional Online Help at CMP2 Student Website: http://www.phschool.com/cmp2/ (Choose Grade 7)
9. Teacher/Parent Communication: a. Agenda (We appreciate parent help with checking the agenda weekly) b. A Parent Letter will be sent home at the beginning of each unit. Additionally, parents may link to the Parent Letter by accessing the teacher’s website/blog. b. Conferences c. Interim report of grades (every 4 ½ weeks) d. Email e. Phone contact as needed
Absence Make-up Procedures: Upon returning to school following an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teachers to request make-up work. Make-up work must be completed by the student within the time specified in the student handbook. (The student will be given the same amount of time to make up the work as the student was absent unless other arrangements are mutually agreed upon.) The student will receive the actual grade on the make-up work. Make-up work submitted late will result in partial credit. Make-up work not turned in will receive a zero.
Seventh Grade Semester Discipline Offenses are based on the three D’s: Defiance, Disrespect, or Denying the others the opportunity to learn. All students will be verbally warned and given the chance to correct behaviors before a discipline slip is assigned. 1st Offense: Student receives a pink slip, and parent is notified. 2nd Offense: Detention earned, parent notified, and parent signature on detention slip is required. 3rd Offense: Detention earned, parent notified, and parent signature on detention slip is required, and a parent conference is held. 4th Offense: Automatic office referral to Assistant Principal, Mr. Thompson.
