Syllabus:  Course Description

Students will study techniques of vocal music, solo and ensemble singing, note reading, sight-singing, musical expression and interpretation, choral literature and choral performance appropriate for each grade level.

Grading Procedures:

Students will be graded over a nine-week period with the following criteria:   

25%           Class participation

                 25%           Classwork/Worksheets

                 25%           Performance/Vocal Assessments

                 25%           Tests/Quizzes

Expectations:  Classroom Procedures 

- Enter with purpose:  place your books under your chair and

   pick up music/binders.

- Check the board for assignments; agenda for the day.

- Sit in your assigned seat each day.

- Begin work as you are seated.

- Observe and follow all class rules.

Expectations:  Before/After School Rehearsals

- Students are expected to be on time for rehearsals before or

   after school.

- Students are expected to have transportation arranged for after

   school rehearsals.

- Students are expected to notify the director in writing

   regarding absences.

- Excused absences are illness, accident, or family emergency.

Expectations:  Performances

- Students are expected to attend all performances unless the

   director is notified in writing, in advance.

- Students are expected to remain for the entire performance and

   not ask to leave before the end of a performance.

- Students are to observe proper concert etiquette and not talk

   during performances.

- Students are to wear proper concert attire and be appropriately

   groomed to participate in a concert.

Provision for Improving Grades:

According to Fulton County Board of Education Procedure, students who have low (75 or below average) or failing cumulative grades may ask the teacher for opportunities to improve their grades.  This provision is for students who have demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance and who have completed all work to date including homework.

Absence Make-up Procedures:

Because Choral Music is a performance art, created with others, it is expected that students and their families will make every effort to be in attendance for performances.  Students are only excused from performances when the request is submitted in writing prior to the performance, except in the case of sudden illness of loss of family member/friend.  Please note:  Absences will be excused at the director’s discretion. Due to the effects of individual absences from concerts, performances count as %25 of the student’s grade.  When students miss class work or a performance, the following guidelines will be used in assigning alternate work:

Class work: Daily work can be made up through homework assignments, as necessary.

Concerts:    Students with an excused absence from a concert will be given an alternate written assignment/project.  Absences from performances are STRONGLY discouraged.

Discipline Guidelines: 

Students are held responsible for all rules in the Fulton county student handbook. In addition, because rehearsal time is a focused, disciplined endeavor, students should follow daily procedures and observe the following  codes and rules of conduct:

Code of Conduct:

1.  Students are to be prepared for class, rehearsals and performances.

2.  Students are to show respect for others and respect for materials.

3.  Students are not to conduct personal grooming during class.

4.  Students are to use their voices appropriately.

Rules of Conduct:

1.  Students are to receive permission before speaking in class.

2.  Students are to receive permission before leaving their seat.

3.  Students are to follow instructions the first time they are given.

4. Students are not to bring any food, snacks or drink to class. (water allowed)

5. Students are to participate fully without disrupting others during  

Disciplinary action begins with a verbal warning and may also include a misconduct report, notification of parents, detention, referral to the office, and or limitations of participation in chorus.

Teacher/Parent Communication:

E-mail is the preferred means of communication and every effort will be made to respond to e-mails within 24 hours.  Please check this HMS Chorus website regularly for updated information.

Concert Wear:

As representatives of Hopewell Middle School, students will wear a traditional choral uniform.  Students should present themselves for performances with a neat, clean, well-groomed appearance.  Students will be given an opportunity to purchase the chorus uniform at the beginning of the school year.  If you enter the school or chorus during the year, please make every effort to acquire the items listed below.   If assistance is needed, please contact the director.
