Course Description:  The following units will be covered over the 9 week course: Wellness, Fitness and Nutrition, Substance Abuse, First Aid, and Human Sexuality.

 

Textbook: Teen Health   Glencoe/McGraw

                        Replacement Cost: $43.00

 

Unit Objectives:

 

Wellness

Mental, Social and Emotional Health:  Students will-

1. Describe opportunities in the health field and obtain information.

2. Identifies First Aid procedures for controlling severe bleeding, as well as incisions, abrasions, punctures, and victims in shock.

3. Demonstrate the ability to recognize an emergency situation.

Describe the steps taken in Rescue Breathing for adults as well as for young children

 

Fitness and Nutrition:  Students Will-

1. Develop an individual fitness program, selecting appropriate activities to meet fitness goals.

2. Describe how anorexia, nervosa, and bulimia damage the body.

Implement personal plan for cardiovascular fitness and flexibility

 

Substance Abuse: Students Will-

1. List marijuana factual information concerning the history, effects, and legal issues, concerning marijuana.

2. Explain how stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and narcotics can harm the body.

3. Recognize peer pressure and strategies to handle peer pressure situations.

4. Determine the ingredients in tobacco and their effects on the human body.

5. Describe the progressive effects of alcohol use and ways of treatment.

6. Discuss the state law concerning drinking and driving and the consequences of breaking those laws.

Define chemical dependency and symptoms associated with the dependency.

 

Human Sexuality: Students Will-

1. Identify effectiveness of methods to prevent pregnancy, and  STDs

2. Recognize that abstinence is the only effective means of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

3. Identify the most common sexually transmitted diseases, their effects on the body, how they are transmitted, how they can be prevented and how they are treated.

4. Explain the social, emotional, intellectual, and economic aspects of dating, stressing abstinence and the need for marriage before children

5. Discussion of self esteem, self image, respect for self and others

6. Recognition of sexual peer pressure situations and abuse.

Identify support systems for help such as family, teachers, religious advisors and counselors

 

 

 

 

 

 

Grading:

The nine week average will be calculated in the following 3 areas and will follow the Fulton County grading scale:

1. Tests 30%

2. Portfolio 40%

Projects 30%

 

Fulton County Schools Grading Systems:

90-100 = A

80-89 = B

70-79 = C

Below 70 = F

 

Make Up Work:

Any class notes, class work, assignments or tests missed due to absences must be made up within 3 class days from when the student returns to school.  It is the responsibility of the student to see that make-up work is done outside the regular class period.

 

Materials:

Students are required to bring pen or pencil, paper and student agenda to class everyday.

 

Teaching Strategies:

Cooperative learning, teacher directed lecture, hands-on activities, and role play activities

Class Rules:

1. Be on time. Excessive tardies will result in detention.

2. Come to class prepared with all required supplies.

3. Be respectful of classmates and teacher at all times.

Participation in all class activities.

 

Behavior:

Proper conduct is expected at all times. Failure to follow class rules will result in the following actions:

1. Verbal Warning

2. Parent Contact via agenda, email or phone and private student/teacher conference.

3. Student removed from class for the period and given alternate assignment/parent contacted.

4. Private Detention

Formal Office Conduct Referral

 

Scheduled Help Sessions:

Teachers are available for help sessions daily from 8:00 – 8:30. Please see your teacher to schedule an appointment.
