Course Description: The following units will be covered over the 9 week course: Wellness, Fitness and Nutrition, Substance Abuse, First Aid, and Human Sexuality.
Textbook: Teen Health Glencoe/McGraw Replacement Cost: $43.00
Unit Objectives:
Wellness Mental, Social and Emotional Health: Students will- 1. Demonstrate ways to communicate care, consideration, and respect of self and others. 2. Analyze the possible causes of conflict and demonstrate the ability to manage conflict in healthy ways and to work cooperatively with others and accept individual differences. Identify being totally healthy involves a balance of mental, social and physical health.
Fitness and Nutrition: Students Will- 1. Identify the functions of the six nutrients in food and understand the amount of each needed each day on an individual basis. 2. Be able to read and analyze nutrition labels. 3. Describe the parts of fitness, demonstrate how to test individual fitness levels, set fitness goals and plan an individual fitness program. Use fitness assessment results to develop a goal statement and plan for improving and maintaining flexibility.
Substance Abuse: Students Will- 1. Identify various legal drugs including alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, marijuana, “Club Drugs”, cocaine, PCP, LSD, methamphetamines and steroids. 2. Define the concept of tolerance and dependence. 3. Identify the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs on teenagers. 4. Understand Synergistic Effects. 5. Recognize the warning signs of problem drinking. Recognize peer pressure and strategies to handle peer pressure situations.
Human Sexuality: Students Will- 1. Identify parts and functions of the male and female reproductive systems 2. Recognize that abstinence is the only effective means of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. 3. Identify the most common sexually transmitted diseases, their effects on the body, how they are transmitted, how they can be prevented and how they are treated. 4. Analyze the personal roles and responsibilities of sexual decisions by using negotiating and refusal skills. 5. Discussion of self esteem, self image, respect for self and others 6. Recognition of sexual peer pressure situations and abuse. Identify support systems for help such as family, teachers, religious advisors and counselors
Grading: The nine week average will be calculated in the following 3 areas and will follow the Fulton County grading scale: 1. Tests 20% 2. Portfolio 50% Projects 30%
Fulton County Schools Grading Systems: 90-100 = A 80-89 = B 70-79 = C Below 70 = F
Make Up Work: Any class notes, class work, assignments or tests missed due to absences must be made up within 3 class days from when the student returns to school. It is the responsibility of the student to see that make-up work is done outside the regular class period.
Materials: Students are required to bring pen or pencil, paper and student agenda to class everyday.
Teaching Strategies: Cooperative learning, teacher directed lecture, hands-on activities, and role play activities

Class Rules: 1. Be on time. Excessive tardies will result in detention. 2. Come to class prepared with all required supplies. 3. Be respectful of classmates and teacher at all times. Participation in all class activities.
Behavior: Proper conduct is expected at all times. Failure to follow class rules will result in the following actions: 1. Verbal Warning 2. Parent Contact via agenda, email or phone and private student/teacher conference. 3. Student removed from class for the period and given alternate assignment/parent contacted. 4. Private Detention Formal Office Conduct Referral
Scheduled Help Sessions: Teachers are available for help sessions daily from 8:00 – 8:30. Please see your teacher to schedule an appointment.
