Course Description:  The following units will be covered over the 9 week course: Wellness, Fitness and Nutrition, Substance Abuse, First Aid, and Human Sexuality.

Unit Objectives:

 

Wellness

Mental, Social and Emotional Health:  Students will-

1. Analyze the relationship between mental and emotional health and achieving a state of wellness.

2. Analyze the causes and effects of stress, signs, and symptoms of stress and healthful ways to respond to stress.

3. Identify factors that promote mental and social health and identify characteristics of good mental and social health.

4. Identify factors contributing to bicycle, skating, and water related injuries.

5. Describe safety issues for passengers in automobiles

6. Explain basic fire safety rules.

Identifies types of burns and describe how sun damage can result in disease and premature death.

Fitness and Nutrition:  Students Will-

1. Describe the relationship between improper diet and disease such as dental disease including disease associated with obesity.

2. Predict positive effects of exercise on physical, mental, and social health.

3. Describe the parts of fitness, demonstrate how to test individual fitness levels, set fitness goals and plan an individual fitness program.

4. Use fitness assessment results to develop a goal statement and plan for improving and maintaining fitness components.

5. Explain how to use the Food Guide Pyramid to make healthy food choices.

Identify factors that lead to heart attack and stroke.

Substance Abuse: Students Will-

1. Examine school rules, system policies, and local, state, and federal laws regulating purchase, sale, use, and possession of alcohol, tobacco products, and other drugs.

2. Analyze the impact of the use of alcohol, tobacco products, and other drugs on the individual, family, and community.

3. Recognize and assesses the effects that alcohol and other drugs could have on individuals operating vehicles and other equipment, including the consequences of riding or being with someone under the influence.

Assess personal risk factors and protective factors for drug use.

Human Sexuality: Students Will-

1. Identify parts and functions of the male and female reproductive systems

2. Recognize that abstinence is the only effective means of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

3. Identify the most common sexually transmitted diseases, their effects on the body, how they are transmitted, how they can be prevented and how they are treated.

4. Analyze the personal roles and responsibilities of sexual decisions by using negotiating and refusal skills.

5. Discussion of self esteem, self image, respect for self and others.

6. Recognition of sexual peer pressure situations and abuse.

Identify support systems for help such as family, teachers, religious advisors and counselors.

Grading:

The nine week average will be calculated in the following 3 areas and will follow the Fulton County grading scale:

1. Tests 20%

2. Portfolio 50%

Projects 30%

 

Fulton County Schools Grading Systems:

90-100 = A

80-89 = B

70-79 = C

Below 70 = F

 

Make Up Work:

Any class notes, class work, assignments or tests missed due to absences must be made up within 3 class days from when the student returns to school.  It is the responsibility of the student to see that make-up work is done outside the regular class period.

 

Materials:

Students are required to bring pen or pencil, paper and student agenda to class everyday.

 

Teaching Strategies:

Cooperative learning, teacher directed lecture, hands-on activities, and role play activities

Class Rules:

1. Be on time. Excessive tardies will result in detention.

2. Come to class prepared with all required supplies.

3. Be respectful of classmates and teacher at all times.

Participation in all class activities.

 

Behavior:

Proper conduct is expected at all times. Failure to follow class rules will result in the following actions:

1. Verbal Warning

2. Parent Contact via agenda, email or phone and private student/teacher conference.

3. Student removed from class for the period and given alternate assignment/parent contacted.

4. Private Detention

Formal Office Conduct Referral

 

Scheduled Help Sessions:

Teachers are available for help sessions daily from 8:00 – 8:30. Please see your teacher to schedule an appointment.
