Minutes of MS Hopewell MS Local School Council March 5, 2008
Members Present: Bill Thompson, Erin Bolling, Steve Colitz, Laura Commandy, Tina D’Aversa, Janice Etscovitz, Michelle Olsen.
Members absent: Julie Pinckney
1. Call to Order: Bill Thompson called the meeting to order at 5:05 pm.
2. Approval of Agenda: The agenda was approved with amendments. (see amended agenda)
3. Approval of Minutes: The minutes were approved with one amendment; members present should have listed Laura Commandy.
4. Old Business- · Math Curriculum – the High School will not offer a dual math curriculum, an additional math textbook will be purchased to be used as a resource for all students. The additional math book will offer the students more of a “traditional” math approach, which will offer the students math computational practice resources. The Fulton County math model will be a “blending” of Connected Math and Traditional Math.
· Assistant Principal – Joey Robinson has been selected as the new AP, he comes to Hopewell with experience as an administrator and has worked at several schools in Fulton County. He will start full time after Spring Break.
· February 27th Early Release Day – the 5th grade teachers from Cogburn Woods and Manning Oaks met with our 6th grade teachers; the 7th and 8th grade teachers met with teachers at Alpharetta High School; TAG and Math Department had departmental meetings.
5. New Business – · Eighth grade trip – 6 buses, 255 students are on the 3-day trip with 18 staff members. Approximately 20 students received financial assistance from either the PTA Grant ($1500.00) or the tour company.
· Check Points – the tests were administered in Language Arts, Math, and Reading in preparation for the CRCT which will be April 17th to the 24th. (Includes Make Up Days) · March 26th Early Release Day – we are an ESOL School and there is mandatory 2.5 hour training that all teachers will attend. In addition, there will be an Introduction to Connections Program sponsored by the Connections Department.
· Georgia Legislation SR 796 – Michelle Olsen shared information re: the Georgia PTA’s opposition to this state bill and its’ progress through the Georgia Legislature.
· Milton Pedestrian Bike Committee – Tina D’Aversa shared information re: this initiative to connect all park facilities via a bicycle path. Tom Sewell, a Hopewell staff member is a participant on the committee. Funding for this project has been supported by a grant received by Representative Jan Jones.
· Milton Disability Committee – a legal sanctioned entity of Milton City with a 7-member board. Its purpose is to pursue all levels of issues to insure Milton complies with the American Disabilities Act. Currently, there is a comprehensive planning process, which will include a survey of all registered voters to help with the development of a 25-year plan.
· April 26th – Milton Goes Green Parade – to promote environmental issues in schools and the community.
